The Dearest Place

from One Thing by the weak & the few

/

about

"The Dearest Place" (AKA The Dearest Place on Earth) was a much used phrase by Charles Spurgeon used to describe the church: "Give yourself to the Church. You that are members of the Church have not found it perfect and I hope that you feel almost glad that you have not. If I had never joined a Church till I had found one that was perfect, I would never have joined one at all!

And the moment I did join it, if I had found one, I should have spoiled it, for it would not have been a perfect Church after I had become a member of it. Still, imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth to us…"

The song is adapted from and based on Psalm 107, verses 4-9 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

I think you can easily make the case that this is an allegory for those who wander lost in sin until they find the church (the City of God) and make it their home. Music and additional lyrics by Dave Campbell.

lyrics

VERSE 1
Once we wandered, in a desert waste
Had no city, had no home
We were hungry, dry and thirsty souls
Had no help, no claim, no hope
Had no help, no claim, no hope

VERSE 2
We were fallen, from the Grace of God
O the bitter, wage of sin
But the Savior, showed His love for us
When our guilt, was laid, on Him
When our guilt, was laid, on Him

CHORUS
O the steadfast, love of Jesus
Brought us, to the dearest place on earth
The dearest place on earth
To His Kingdom, to His holy people
To the dearest place on earth
The dearest place on earth

VERSE 3
Come all weary, heavy laden ones
For He calls us, “Come and dine!”
There’s a table, He’s prepared for us
We will feast, with the Divine
We will feast, with the Divine
